36 - Weites Land und wildes Wasser
Monschau-Mützenich
Hiking trail 36 starts at the village square in Mützenich, where the "Uraalt Scholl" village museum is located. This building was built in 1830 as the village's first school and was used until 1925. Next to the Uraalt Scholl is the Alt Scholl, which is now used by various local clubs. At Eupener Straße, turn right to the Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew, where a special, artistically designed Stations of the Cross invite you to pause for a moment. Along Rennertzgasse, which is lined with old beech hedges, you walk along a section of the Eifelsteig trail. Further on, a beautiful path leads through the middle of the idyllic village from the fire towards the old customs, where you walk along the edge of the Mützenicher Venns. At the former customs station between Germany and Belgium, where the smugglers' monument stands today, a picnic area opposite invites you to linger. The trail continues through a wide meadow landscape with several far-reaching views and finally descends towards the Reichenstein monastery, which is located in the immediate vicinity of trail no. 36. the imposing 12th century building is now run by the Premonstratensian order. Finally, the trail meets the Vennbahn, a cycle route from Aachen via the High Fens to Troisvierges in Luxembourg, where the hiker enters Belgian territory. The route continues downhill into the romantic Rur valley. The view of the Rur and the rocky Schlüsselbach stream is particularly beautiful. Nowhere else in its course does the Rur rush through its stony streambed as lively as in the Upper Rur Valley. On the way back to Mützenich, you pass the barbecue hut, which was built in 1983. On the outskirts of the village, you can also see the Josefskapelle chapel, which was rebuilt in 1967. The varied circular route ends back at the village square in Mützenich.
